dc.description.abstract |
Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density and microarchitectural
deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequence increase of bone fragility
and susceptibility to fracture. It is a major public health tissue affecting a large portion of
the population >50 years of age. It leads a huge burden through the increased morbidity
and mortality associated with fragility fracture (Bradney et al., 2000).
The word osteoporosis‖ was first introduced in France and Germany which literally
means "porous bones". It occurs when bones lose an excessive amount of their protein
and mineral content, particularly calcium. Over time, bone mass and therefore bone
strength, is decreased. As a result, bones become fragile and break easily. Even a sneeze
or a sudden movement may be enough to break a bone in someone with severe
osteoporosis. |
