icddr,b is an international public health research center dedicated to tackling major health
challenges facing people living in poverty in its host country, Bangladesh, and other low-income
countries around the world. Originally icddr,b was established to develop realistic and scalable
interventions for cholera and other diarrheal diseases. An estimated 50 million lives have been
saved globally over the past 40 years because to the discovery and development of zinc treatment
and oral rehydration solution (ORS) by icddr,b, primarily among children under the age of five.
Over time, icddr,b’s research agenda has evolved to encompass maternal and child health,
nutrition, vaccine sciences, other communicable diseases including HIV & AIDS, the health
consequences of climate change and the control of chronic diseases. In the global South, the icddr,b
is currently one of the premier institutions for excellence and innovation in public health research.

Internship Report on ICDDR,B Library
Shoily, Anika Mahmud
The internship program serves as a bridge for those wishing to make the transition from university
life to the corporate level. Through the internship, I was able to learn about the actual work
environment, which is very different from the academic environment. During my internship, I had
the opportunity to work in a department to learn how a library develop resources My experience
so far has helped me realize the things that are done within the organization, such as group work,
work environment and peering support. Thus, the internship period provided me with an
opportunity to broaden my knowledge and recognize my strengths/weaknesses. This will be useful
for future career development.

Islam, Md. Shajedul
In 1960s, icddr,b was established in Dhaka as the South-East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) Cholera Research Laboratory. The Cholera Research Laboratory (CRL) quickly gained a reputation on a global scale. The CRL also set up a sizable health and demographic surveillance site in the 1960s at Matlab. It is now the longest-running such site in the global South and a model throughout the world. The region's leading library for medicine and public health is icddr,b Library and Information Services. Its goal is to disseminate research findings and results of global health research from icddr,b scientists and the international research community.
icddr,b library and information services operates a modern library and information centre. It was established in 1962.
Library uses the most advanced tools and information technology for collecting, processing and storing information. The icddr,b library has a well-organized collection, that is print books, bound journals, e-resources, online databases, CDs and training materials, also ICT facilities.
