<title>A Study of Analgesic Activity of Methanol and Pet ether Extracts of Barks of Stereospermum Chelonoides</title>
<link>http://dspace.ewubd.edu:8080/handle/123456789/2472</link>
<description>A Study of Analgesic Activity of Methanol and Pet ether Extracts of Barks of Stereospermum Chelonoides
Cruze, Lia Rose Merrry D.
The plant Stereospermum chelonoides has been used for the general promotion of health
and longevity by Asian tribal. It is used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of
various diseases pain, fever, inflammations, asthma, liver disorders etc. The aim of the
present study was to evaluate the analgesic activity of pet-ether extract and methanol
extract of Stereospermum chelonoides. The powdered barks of Stereospermum
chelonoides were extracted with methanol and pet ether. The fraction was used to
evaluate analgesic activities. The analgesic activity was measured by acetic acid induced
writhing method. Methanol fraction and pet ether fraction showed analgesic activity
respectively with 59.53 % inhibition of pain and 55.85% in the P&lt;0.001. The standard
(Indomethacin) showed pain of inhibition by 86.96 %. The results of study clearly
indicate the presence of analgesic properties of methanol and pet-ether extract. The
obtained results provide a support for the use of this plant in traditional medicine and its
further investigation.

<description>Study on Antimicrobial and Cytotoxicity Activity of Methanol Extract of Dracaena Spicata
Jannat, Fatema
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the cytotoxic and antimicrobial activity of methanolic extract of Dracaena spicata of the family Asparagaceae.Dracaena spicata has been used as a medicinal plant for the general promotion of health and longevity by Asian tribal. It is used as a traditional medicine for the treatment ofvarious diseases like cough, syphilis, conjunctivitis, constipation, boils, eczema, scabies, septic abscess, itching and skin allergy, burns, chicken pox, warts and leucoderma, fungal and bacterial infections, including healing cuts and wounds has been documented by randomly interviewing Chakma, Marma and Tanchunga tribes of the hill tracts districts of Bangladesh since 1995.TheantimicrobialactivitiesofmethalonicextractofDracaenaspicataplantweretested againstthegram-positive(Bacillus sereus, Bacillus megaterium,Staphylococcus aureaus) andgram-negativebacterial(Pseudomonas aureaus,Salmonella paratyphi, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio parahemolyticus, Vibrio mimicus, Sheigella dysenteriae, Escherichia coli) strainsbyobservingthezoneofinhibition.Theantimicrobialtestwasperformedbydiscdiffus ionmethod.ThecrudemethanolextractofDracaenaspicata plant showedmoderate to strong (9mm-30mm) antimicrobial activitiesagainst themicroorganisms. ButmethanolextractofDracaenaspicatashowedstrong activityagainstPseudomonasaureaus (30mm) and the lowest activity was found against Bacillusmegaterium (9mm). However, no activity was found againstSalmonella paratyphi, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio parahemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureaus, Escherichia coli, Sheigella dysenteriae. The cytotoxic activity of the plant was done by using Artemia saline Leach. The LC50 was observed approximately as 46.4729 μg /mL with a R2 value of 0.772. Cytotoxicity of methanolic extract of Dracaena spicata was low to moderate. The obtained results provide a support for the use of this plant in traditional medicine and its further investigation

<title>Identification of Gram Negative Bacteria in Different Ready-to-Eat Foods Vended in Different Institutional Premises Situated in Dhaka City</title>

<description>Identification of Gram Negative Bacteria in Different Ready-to-Eat Foods Vended in Different Institutional Premises Situated in Dhaka City
Shahjahan, Tasnim Binte
Ready to eat foods vended on the streets are foods and beverages that are prepared and sold for
immediate consumption by vendors on the street or other public places. These types of foods are
an affordable source of nourishment for the students, low income workers and others. The
objective of this study was to identify presence of gram negative bacteria in different ready-to
eat foods vended in different institutional premises situated in Dhaka City. From the premises, 30
food samples were collected and tested to find out the presence of suspected enteric bacteria
E.coli, Vibrio, Klebsiella, Salmonella and Shigella spcies. Five different agar media were used to
observe the growth of the microorganisms. Later several different biochemical tests were
performed to find out the presence of bacteria in the samples. Among 30 samples, 17 (56.6%)
samples were observed to be contaminated by different bacteria. Among 17, after biochemical
tests were performed, 7 (23.3%) samples were observed to be contaminated with the suspected
microorganisms. Among 7 (23.3%) samples, 3 (10%) samples were suspected to contain
Klebsiella spp., 2(6.66%) samples were suspected to contain E.coli and 2 (6.66%) samples were
suspected to contain Vibrio spp. We have also performed colony counting of additional 6 ready
to eat food samples by standard method. The samples were Nargis kabab, Chola, Laddu, Boroi
achar, Alur chop and Tikia. Out of 6 samples, Colony Forming Units (CFUs) have been observed
and maximum concentrated colonies were found in Laddu, Tikia, Nargis kabab and Chola. All
these enteric bacteria can be the potential cause of foodborne illness and so they pose as a great
hazard to the students. Therefore, providing appropriate education and training to the street
vendors has become an important necessity to ensure good public health.

<description>Study on Awareness and Knowledge Regarding Eye Diseases among Students of East West University
Karmoker, Bijoy
The human eye is the organ which gives the sense of sight, allowing us to observe and learn more about surrounding world than we do other with our four senses. Eye is used for almost all activity we perform. That is why sight is sense that value more than all the rest. Because of four disease of eye which are cataract, glaucoma, night blindness and diabetic retinopathy many people lost their sight. Now a day’s diabetes patients are increased worldwide as well as diabetic retinopathy risk are also increased. In Bangladesh cataract is major eye condition due to lack of awareness. The aim of the study was to access the awareness and knowledge regarding major four eye disease. Total 400 students aged between 18-29, from East West University of different departments were participated in the study. They answered to a pre-structured questionnaire in which having heard of disease represent the “Awareness” definition of the disease represent the “Knowledge”. The awareness of Cataract according to the study was 88%, Glaucoma 57%, Night blindness 98%, Diabetic Retinopathy 72%. The knowledge about cataract was 46.32% and 70% knew about surgery but 55% didn’t know about IOL. In case of Glaucoma only 31% knew that glaucoma causes permanent visual loss. Majority of the students didn’t know who are at risk of Diabetic Retinopathy it was around 33.21%. It was also observed that students had minimum knowledge about the treatment of glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Analyzing the result it was seen that the awareness and knowledge regarding major four eye diseases among the students were not in satisfactory level. It is important to increase the knowledge and awareness for early detection of these four eye diseases.
